Handle the Trivial With More Ease

Handle the Trivial with More Ease...

Do you remember that Red Bull free fall guy – Felix Baumgartner?   Free falling from the stratosphere?   That was already 12 years ago!

I was having a distracted curiosity moment and looked him up and read one of his interviews from after the free fall.

Did you know that the biggest threat to the jump even happening was Baumgartner’s mental fortitude?   Not the planning or equipment design.

Felix required months of mindset training to be able to be in the jump suit for over 8 hrs  – basically a sensory deprivation chamber where he could only here himself breathing.

The suit had to be both pressurized and able to handle temperatures of -72° C.  He was very uncomfortable.   A total lack of mobility and sense of control.   He felt like he was breathing through a pillow for nearly 8 hours.  Completely separated from the outside world.

Like being in an elevator x 1,000!

Something you can take away today and apply from something deeply introspective he said just before leaping:

“Sometimes you have to go up to understand how small you are...”

What a moment that must have been for him.

What’s the take home?

You can be more productive and effective by channeling the perspective of that 128,000 foot view Felix experienced.

You don’t need to be in the stratosphere to channel a bigger perspective right this second…  notice how you feel a little ‘lighter’ instantly.  Hold that.   And notice now how insignificant the minor irritations are with that ‘expanded’ perspective.   How much easier it is to ‘deal’.

Feeling disorganized or overwhelmed?   …take a moment for yourself and simply breathe.

Having a hard time recruiting good employees?   …so is everyone else.

Didn’t do any exercise this week yet?   …go for a walk today.  Or do 2 mins of stretching.

Someone said something stupid?   Whatever… that’s their baggage to carry and repair.

Practice an expanded perspective today and for the rest of the week.   Set a phone reminder or put up a postie note if you need to (ie. don’t rely on brain memory to do it).

I’ll be practicing right along with you.

“It’s time you realized that you have something in you more powerful and miraculous than the things that affect you and make you dance like a puppet.” Marcus Aurelius
