Leadership in Uncertain Times
Leadership in Uncertain Times

Let’s be real…The economy’s shaky.  Likely we’re headed into a recession. And every other podcast, news feed, and networking event whispers some version of the same thing: Brace yourself…

If you're a business owner, this low hum of uncertainty isn’t just noise, it’s heavy. You feel it when you're looking ahead.   You feel it when you're wondering if now is the right time to hire, scale, or pull back. You feel it when you're working late again, holding it all together while keeping your team calm and your cash flow (hopefully!) positive.

Here’s the truth that not enough people are saying out loud:

You don’t need more hustle right now. You need more self-leadership.

What Is Self-Leadership, Really?

It’s not just mindset. It’s not just discipline. It’s not just setting goals or visualizing success.

Self-leadership is how you create space for your own success - especially when everything around you feels uncertain.

It’s about clarity when things are foggy. Confidence when the path ahead is unclear.

Looking after your energy first. And commitment when fear wants to pull you off course.

Leaders Aren’t Built When It’s Easy

In times of uncertainty, your business doesn’t need a superhero… it needs you at your strongest.

But not the over-functioning, reactive, “do it all yourself” version. The clear, grounded, intentional version of you. The version who pauses before reacting. Who asks the hard questions and actually sits with the answers. Who protects their time, energy, and focus like it’s the most valuable asset in the business (because it is).

FIVE Anchors for the Storm

If you want to be recession-ready, start by becoming resilience-ready.

Here’s how:

1. Clarity Over Chaos

What are you actually in control of right now? Don’t waste your mental bandwidth trying to predict everything. Get clear on your priorities. Get simple. Get focused.

2. Standards Over Stress

You don’t rise to the level of your goals; you drop to the level of your standards. Check your non-negotiables: health, sleep, habits, mindset, relationships. Strong standards = strong leadership.   And side note – it totally BOOSTS your confidence.

3. Presence Over Panic

Most anxiety lives in future-thinking. Come back to the present moment.

Ask yourself: “What does my strongest leadership look like right now?”

...Then act from that place.

4. Connection Over Control

Now’s not the time to isolate or try to white-knuckle your way through. Lean on your network. Talk to your people. Be human. Community builds resilience faster than competition ever will.

5. Energy Over Everything

Your energy is your most precious currency. Guard it. Nourish it. Invest it where it matters most.

The Businesses That Rise Now Will Be Led From Within

Recessions come and go. Trends shift. AI will keep evolving.

Markets will keep doing their thing.

But your ability to lead yourself — with clarity, confidence, and calm — is what will determine whether your business weathers this season… or thrives in it.

So take a breath. Check in with yourself. Heed strong advice.

You don’t need to have all the answers — but you do need to be rooted enough to lead forward.

Because that’s what real leadership looks like right now. And it starts with you.
