The 4 Traits People Actually Want From Leaders

Hope.  Trust.  Compassion.  Stability.  


If you genuinely boost these traits within any team you lead (including your family!), you will be a more effective and respected leader.


These four traits, above all others, emerged from Gallup research into what people truly want from their leaders.  The findings were shared in the best-selling book Strengths Based Leadership by Gallup leadership experts Tom Rath and Barry Conchie.


Interestingly, the Gallup Organization re-did the study with even more participants across a much broader group of people 5 years ago, and the findings were again confirmed.  Hope.  Trust.  Compassion.  Stability.  In that order.


So if you want to be a great leader for your team, focus on how you authentically deliver these four traits!


  • Hope - the belief in a better future; strategic vision, optimism, and the ability to inspire others


  • Trust - a commitment to integrity and honesty; it is shown through consistency, reliability, and vulnerability


  • Compassion - a deep concern for the well-being of others; demonstrated through active listening, empathy, and holistic support


  • Stability -  the importance of security and foundations; shown through psychological safety, emotional steadiness during chaos, and clear communication


What I love so much about the nature of Gallup’s findings is that these 4 traits were validated by asking real people being led in real life situations what they truly needed from their leaders!


And just as interesting as what makes this list, is what is NOT in the list!


Not just a better plan or system.   Not to be micro-managed.   Not task-based leadership.  Not to be strong in process & regulations.     Not authority & control.   Not overreach.   Not certainty.   Not even charisma.


What this tells us is that genuine people skills matter most.


Connection.  Listening.  Approachability.  Trust.


These qualities matter far more than authority, bureaucracy, process-driven, or control. 


Because leadership, at its core, is about people.


It’s people first. Always.
