The Currencies that Matter More than Money

Money has energy to it.   It’s a currency.   Like current for electricity, money flows.

While money is considered “the” currency, it is certainly not the only.   And arguably, not the most important.

I was speaking with a 1-year business owner this week about currency.  Money.  And about being able to pay herself a wage soon. It's important to break that seal at some point, when their focus has been on re-investing every dollar back into the business.  

Interestingly, business owners & leaders benefit by grounding in other forms of currency too! 

IMPACT

• What measurable good does your business create for your team, clients, and community… and how do you know?

• This shifts the main question from “How much did we make?”, to “What difference did we make?”

Each of us is biologically hardwired for impact, contribution, and making a difference. 

  To understand that we need to express this need to feel more fulfilled is important ...even divine.

ATTENTION

• Your attention is the currency that expert social media engineers pine for!   Cheetos powder-coated finger tips are writing the most dopamine-addicting code so they can own your attention

• The ideal form of attention is used for listening, connecting, and making someone feel important while in your presence.   What a difference it would make if it was given the same attention as social media…

TRUST

• How much you trust others depends on how good you are at selecting friends and acquaintances… and while this type of trust is important, an even more valuable form of trust is the kind you earn.

• You earn trust by being honest, giving attention & actually listening, and by being the right amount of vulnerable for the situation.  

• As important as the trust you earn from others is the trust you give to yourself.  Recent research has shown that self-trust is at the heart of your own confidence.  When you trust yourself to make good decisions, and to do that in real time (rather than needing to know the whole ‘plan’ ahead of time - certainty & security seeking - you get into action and figure it out on the fly!   That’s powerful for faster results!!

Whether you run a business, or are the money person in your household, realize there are other forms of currency for which the work you do, and the impact you make, are even more meaningful than money.  These are but 3 of many.

And when you really think about it, these other currencies listed above make the world go-round just as much as money does.   Probably more.  You just can’t buy your groceries with it.
