The Pattern I Keep Seeing

There’s a theme that keeps popping up in client conversations, group discussions, and even in my own reflections.

We set goals that are big and bold – when what we really need are bite-sized WINS.

And honestly?  It makes total sense.

You’re an entrepreneur, a business owner. You carry the weight of growing revenue, leading your team, providing for your family… all while trying to have a life outside your business, too.

High achievers aim high. But most business owners I work with (myself included) are real people.

We’re not branding ourselves as Instagram superstars - grinding 18 hours a day, running on four hours sleep, skipping family dinners and chasing hustle culture.    No thanks!   If that IS you, please feel free to unsubscribe…

We’re the heart of the small business community: everyday, driven owners who care deeply about what we build and who we become along the way.

The Real Issue

At the root of this over-ambitious goal-setting is a genuine desire: to create big, meaningful results.

To fulfill the vision you’ve always held—for success, community respect, and lifestyle freedom.

But here’s where it gets tricky.

Your ego sneaks in without you even realizing. It whispers: “If it’s not a MASSIVE goal, it doesn’t count.”

And your inner critic?  It piles on.  Telling you small steps are weak, lazy, “not enough”.

This is what kills your momentum.  This is why progress stalls.

Think of it like a ladder. The top rung is your big, meaningful goal. The bottom rung is where you are today.

But your brain (or more accurately, your ego) convinces you there are only two rungs. And it expects you to leap from the bottom to the top – just like that.

No wonder it feels overwhelming.

No wonder you feel like you’re falling short.

Laughably Small Goals

My mastermind group and I chuckled at this term this morning in our meeting…and also had the realization that it's true.

So here’s the shift: break your goals down into laughably small steps.

So small, they barely require much energy or decision-making.

Instead of “Build a social media presence and attract leads,” try:

“Spend 15 minutes creating a post I would read myself.  Do two posts per week for the next four weeks.”

That’s it. Easy to do.  Easy wins.  And wins build momentum...and confidence.

The Practice

So, here’s the practice:

Break your goal into tiny, doable steps.

Write out the next 3 steps. Finish one, add a new 3rd step.

Schedule them on your calendar/planner: 30 to 60 minutes max per step.

Stick to it.

You’ll find yourself more consistent.

More accomplished.

And WAY more satisfied with your progress.

Because big dreams aren’t built in giant leaps.

They’re built one small rung at a time.
